All About CAPM®

The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) is PMI®'s entry-level project management certification. It validates foundational knowledge across the full modern delivery spectrum: predictive, agile, and business analysis. Unlike the PMP®, the CAPM® requires no professional project experience, which makes it the ideal starting credential for students, career changers, and early-career professionals. The CAPM® is issued only by Project Management Institute (PMI®).

The CAPM® has one of the simplest eligibility paths of any PMI® credential. No project experience is required. Secondary degree (high school diploma, GED, or global equivalent) 23 hours of project management education, completed before you sit the exam. The 23 education hours can come from a formal course, a PMI Authorized Training Partner, or an eligible academic program, and you record all of them in your application.

The exam is based on the CAPM® Exam Content Outline (ECO®) and evaluates four domains: Domain 1: Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts (36%): roles, planning, risk, stakeholders, and problem solving Domain 2: Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies (17%): structured, plan-driven delivery Domain 3: Agile Frameworks and Methodologies (20%): adaptive delivery and agile ways of working Domain 4: Business Analysis Frameworks (27%): requirements, elicitation, and value realization. The most common preparation mistake is treating agile and business analysis as extras. Together they make up nearly half the exam.

The CAPM® is valid for 3 years. To renew, holders earn 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) per cycle under PMI®'s Continuing Certification Requirements, then submit a renewal. If the certification lapses, the exam must be retaken.
